Dub Brigade
Bucket-brigade style delay
Dark, warm repeats in the style of the old analog BBD delays: from a single echo to self-oscillation. The tone filter sits inside the feedback loop, so every repeat comes back a little darker and narrower than the last.
- VST3, 64-bit, Windows and Linux
- Mono and stereo tracks, zero latency
- Free-time or tempo sync, 1/1 to 1/32T
- Tails keep ringing for 10 s after the music stops
00 / SOUND
Echo that
won't stay quiet.
Dub Brigade is built for dub: set the feedback around the middle and the repeats stop dying out, push it further and the delay self-oscillates and builds up. Move Repeat Rate while playing and the repeats bend in pitch like a tape echo.
The output is limited at 0 dBFS, so it will not blow up your speakers — but turn the monitors down before you experiment.
01 / CONTROLS
What the
knobs do.
- Input
- Level of the signal entering the delay; the dry signal is not changed. Middle is unchanged, full is +6 dB. Above the middle the signal is also saturated.
- Repeat Rate
- Time between repeats, from about 997 ms down to 100 ms. Moving it while playing bends the pitch of the repeats like a tape echo.
- Sync
- Switches Repeat Rate between free time and 16 note values (straight, dotted and triplet) computed from your host's tempo.
- Feedback
- How much signal returns to the delay. Around the middle the repeats stop dying out; above it the delay self-oscillates. Needs some input to start.
- Bass Feedback
- How much bass goes back into the feedback. At 0 the repeats lose their low end; turn it up to keep the bass in the repeats.
- Tone
- A sweeping band-pass filter inside the feedback loop, from about 100 Hz (dark, full) to 4.5 kHz (bright, thin). With high Feedback it sets the pitch of the self-oscillation.
- Modulation
- Depth of the delay-time modulation: motion and chorus-like wobble, strong vibrato above about 0.6.
- Slow
- Makes the LFO about 4 times slower and the modulation deeper.
- Tone Mod
- The same LFO also sweeps the Tone filter.
- Compander
- Compresses the signal before the delay and expands it after, as in many analog delays. Reshapes fast transients.
- Stereo Width
- 0 is mono, the middle keeps left and right independent, above the middle the repeats get wider than the input. Only the repeats are affected.
- Dry/Wet
- Balance between the dry signal and the repeats, with a crossfade that keeps the loudness steady.
